Tangier…made an international zone in 1923, for thirty years the party never ended in a city of controversy, spies, bohemians, intrigue, and glamour made famous by the likes of Barbara Hutton, Yves St. Laurent, the Rolling Stones, and William Burroughs. After losing some its luster over the last decade, Tangier is back as the go-to-destination of designers and eccentrics seeking an authentic experience. Despite all of the changes to this exotic port city, it still manages to retain its authentic flavor without becoming too polished. Renowned Landscape Architect and long-time resident Madison Cox gives us his take on this mysterious and intriguing crossroad on the northern tip of Morocco.

To get the essence of Tangier, Go to Place du Kasbah which takes you back centuries. But my favorite secret gem is Fondouk Chejra where you will find the textile weavers and scores of beautifully handcrafted blankets and scarves - Madison Cox

Hotel La Maison Blanche

Located at the highest point of the citadel is a lovely riad, Le Maison Blanche. Located at the entrance to the Kasbah, Le Maison Blanc offers beautifully appointed bedrooms with luxurious bathrooms, each individually decorated by the late French interior designer, Regis Milcent. Fresh mint tea is served in the reception area by Owner Aziz Begdouri, whose turned the family riad into a hotel three years ago. Don’t miss breakfast on the roof terrace with stunning views of the city as well as the Strait of Gibraltar.

BOUTIQUE MAJID

Boutique Majid

Wander through the winding alleys of the Kasbah and you will come across Boutique Majid, a treasure trove of Moroccan and Northern African antiques, textiles, carpets, and Berber jewelry. Owner Abdelmajid Rais El Fenni has been in business for over 40 years and is always around to chat and to give advice over mint tea. He may even take you up to the roof to show you a stunning view deep from within the Medina. Leonardo DiCaprio and Mick Jagger are among those who have visited.

Cafe Hafa

Perched on a hillside steps away from the former home of Malcolm Forbes, sits a discrete but bustling cafe which has been serving sweet mint tea for decades. Make sure that you arrive before sunset where the cafe becomes full of the local crowd who meet here to watch the sunset over the sea. Terraced on the hillside, each table has a view. It's truly a surreal moment that will be long remembered.

EL MAROCCO CLUB

El Morocco Club

If you are looking for some nightlife in the Kasbah, make your way to El Morocco Club, located near the entrance to the Kasbah. Here you will find a basement club full of chic locals and expatriates sitting by the piano bar. Designed by Frenchmen Vincent Coppe and Oscar Badji, the club is quite reminiscent of a Humphrey Bogart film where you will find yourself swept back into a period untouched by time.
